I'm back,...Abraham Lincoln's Posterized Portrait.

I have not posted for almost two weeks because I was moving my mother into a retirement home and had to take care of all the "stuff" she has accumulated in her 92 years! She is now settled into a very nice retirement home, has a nice room, likes the meals and the activities and is making friends. Although I still have a few more trips to move furniture, my life should start to get back to normal.
Last night, I started a posterized portrait of Abraham Lincoln as part of the DWP weekly challenge.

Part of the challenge was to paint this portrait using only 3 colors to achieve shades of gray. I decided to use only one color, ultramarine ( although I did add a touch of black for the eyes:-) and to use an almost pop art approach - posterization, where the image is created by a number of different values, without any concern about color or smooth transitions.  This time, I did not use the pouring method as in last month's posterized portrait I did all in green ( see Feb 9th posting). The result is a monochrome posterized portrait that was a lot of fun to do! Do check all the entries in this challenge.

I am also completing another "Mascarone" ( carved stone head over an archway) that I will post tomorrow at the latest.
I hope that you have all been well!

  1. Blue is beautiful. I have checked the entries in the challenge blog and I must say I like better what you've done. Some entries are different from the reference photo. Your light and dark values of blues are beautifully done.
Good also to know that your mother is finding her new place great.

  3. Welcome back Christiane! We were worried about you and about to send out a search party. Smile! I was happy to see your Abe Lincoln painting as i have been following the daily painters recently. I think it is such a good thing and must give it a go myself. Your waterolor of Mr. Lincoln is terrific.
I love the choice of color.
I started a new blog too, to try and build up a pet portrait business. It is slow going but what else do i have to do? Smile!
    Have a great day Chrisitane.

  4. Ross, thank you for the concern regarding my blog absence :-)I am glad that you like my version of Abe...a bit stilted, but I was pleased with the results for such a quick painting...I am usually such a slow painter:-)
I will have to check your new blog and wish you all the best with the pet portrait business. I was telling a friend yesterday that she should try getting commissions painting dogs and cats. I think you will be do very well in this new endeavor.

  8. Glad to hear mum's settled in well. Worries me know at 75 what an enormous collection of artwork and materials I have stashed around my home. Whatever will my daughter do with them when its my turn??!! Lincoln is great - wonderful technique.

  11. Thank you, Ann. As for portraits, at this point, I think I can paint only these simplified posterized portraits. I may register for a 10-week drawing class starting in April; this may give me the skills and confidence to attempt a "real" portrait:-)
