"Pierre, the Green Man" - Finish line in sight at last!

I have almost completed my watercolor "Pierre, the Green Man", the second in a series of three Ottawa stone carvings. The first one was "Angus, the Green Man" and the third will be " Scottie, the Green Man".
It is on Fabriano SP watercolor paper and it will be framed to 25" X 25" . The photo was taken inside and the colors are off: in real life, they are softer and lighter than on this photo. I will try to get a truer picture once it is all completed.

This painting has taken me several weeks of working off and on...It was often difficult from my photos to see all the details. The colors are all my own, since the carving is in grey stone. I really wanted to have a play of warm and cool, light and shadows. I almost ruined it last night when I put dark blue shadows all across the eye on the left side of the painting...I should never paint at night!!! But thank to the painting gods for non-staining watercolor paints: I removed most of the blue and I think that  the eye will be ok.

I am very pleased that this painting is almost finished and I am looking forward to painting something quick and easy for the next little while.

Tell me what you think.

  2. So sorry I have not been commenting lately, I have a very full life and then added to that for the past 4 months have been carer to my husband who has 4 cracked vertebra and they now think he has osteoporosis. He is on crutches and can hardly stand due to the pain despite morphine. Anyway, that apart, just wanted to say how I have enjoyed scanning through your posts and congratulate you on the sales successes at recent shows. As for this coloured version of the 'stone man', having seen the original carving I think you have made a great rendering. You say not finished, but I do hope you leave one side uncoloured - it seems to add to the mystery. I'm looking for an email address, so I can reply about the firewood crisis in India. best wishes Joannie

    1. As I mentioned in my email, Joan, I am so sorry to hear about your husband's health problems. His condition certainly does seem extremely painful! I hope things will soon improve.
I am pleased that you like this painting. I will leave the left hand side of the painting as is. All I want to do now is fine tune some of the leaves on the right hand side.
      Thank you for your email!
      Take good care of yourself.

    1. Pat, it's great to hear from you! Capturing the expression on the carved face was my big challenge in this painting. I am so pleased that you like it.

  4. This one is coming along so nicely, Christiane. You are such a master of the medium. Like Pat, I am very impressed with the expression you achieved. Good that you could recover from your blue incident. That is one of those "oh, darn!" moments, isn't it.
