Something fresh in this heat wave

Cherries and Lace II
This is the hottest summer in Ottawa in the last decade at least. The heat and the humidity make me feel really lazy...even though we have air conditioning.  I wanted to paint something quick, fresh, easy.  So, here is a small 8" X10" watercolor of cherries and lace on Arches CP.
I still have a bit of tweaking to do: one of the three cherries on the lace has too much white; there is some white space between two of the cherries on the plate; on the left hand side, on the plate, the highlights are too lined up.
I like the overall painting, but would change a few things if I redid it: I would probably try to improve on the highlights on the plate ( I followed my photograph and used some grey and it looks too flat. I would probably add more color. The top right portion of the lace is too blue - I painted that tonight...l never like what I paint at night.
I hope that you like this little painting and that you are not suffering from the heat wherever you are.

  1. This is great! I just can't paint that small! I like the painting - but I'm still suffering from the heat - upper 90's since forever! and more in store (apparently forever!) It's not supposed to ever be this hot in Ottawa, is it??? Keep up the great work!

  2. Hi, Deb. Indeed, there seems to be no end to this heat:-( Ottawa is known for its summer humidity, but we rarely have such a long stretch of it without a break.
I am glad that you like this painting. After finishing a larger, time-consuming painting like my last Mascarone, I always feel that I have forgotten everything and will never be able to paint again...:-)

  3. This is another great work Christiane. I like very much the lace and for me I want the color of the cherries a little bit in darker red. But overall, for me this painting is finished. Very good composition.

Here in The Netherlands, it is supposed to be summer but what we have now is like late fall, cloudy and rain. But I think this weather is much better than too warm.

  4. I blogged about critiquing and you are insufferable on yourself! Your painting is much lovelier than you seem to realize. I'd say contrast between cherry #1 and cherry #2 is all it needs, but that's just me. I think the white highlights play nicely with the lace tablecloth. It creates an echo of lace over the dark parts of the composition. Very nice!

  5. This is lovely - that black plate makes the red cherries jump and pop and I love what you've done - the more muted highlights in the plate make us look but don't take away from the stars of the show. Beautiful lacework, too.

  6. And I thought we'd have to escape to Canada to get away from the heat? No luck there, either, eh? 95+ with high humidity again today and, if the weather folks are to be believed, all week next week!!! YIKES!

  8. Wow! I have not been round for a while and thought it time to pop in for a visit. Thought i would share with you my first reaction to seeing your new work. You have grown so much as an artist Christiane and i see so much more in your work now. The sparkles on the fruit are brilliant and there is lovely light in this piece with nice contrasts. It is so true that to be a better artist we need only paint. Well done and congratulations on your gallery acceptance. That will be a great experience for you I'm sure. As for me, i am only working this summer and not painting at all! Hope to be back at it soon. By for now, and stay cool! Ross

  9. You must be critiquing a different painting than the one you posted because it is lovely!

  10. You guys are all soooooooooo nice - I wish I could give each one of you a super big hug!

Cora: I have now darkened the cherries a bit more. I could certainly take nice autumn weather right now:-)

Susan: I have now added a bit of contrast between two of the cherries. I will have to go and read your posts on critiquing ( and self-critiquing):-) I know that I tend to be too much of a perfectionist when it comes to my work.

Rhonda: Thank you for your comments, and no, don't try to escape the heat by coming to Canada. The last few days were a bit cooler - right now just before 8pm, it is about 80 degrees F, but with the humidity if feels like 96! We are getting free saunas!

Katherine: You are always so kind...And I admire your wonderful colors!

Ross: It is always such a pleasure when you drop in. I really appreciate your comments and support. I hope that you will be back painting very, very soon!

Vicki: You must have been talking to Susan Rioux:-) Thank you very much! I am looking forward to seeing your next project.

    Take care, everyone!

  11. Christiane, you just keep getting better and better. Love this painting and can't believe how hard you are on yourself. I think most artists always find something in their work that they would change or do differently and that is what helps us to grow, isn't it?

  13. What a little beauty!
I can see what you mean on the cherry highlights, but that's the only tweak I'd make. I agree with Ann, you do keep getting better and better xx

  14. Pat, thank you! I have decreased one of the highlights and am more now more pleased with it. I am so pleased that you see improvement in the quality of my work.

  16. Kathy, I am so pleased that you like this painting. You should try painting lace - it is very easy, but I warn you, it is addictive:-)

  17. Beautifully done, Christiane. I love the whole thing. Cherries are always the star of any painting and these are lucious. Your highlights are just right. Sorry to have been AWOL lately. Y'all are talking about the heat...you don't know what heat is until you live in Texas this year. Today it was 109 and we had a heat index of 112...this heat is really playing with my head. Although I am inside and comfortable in AC, it's still depressing...makes me where I don't even want to paint and that's unusual.

The others have talked about your growth as an artist...I can see it also. You're just painting your little heart out...and it shows.

  18. Really lovely painting, Christiane. I love the way you've made the lace look so delicate and the cherries look delicious!

  19. Mollie, it is so nice to hear from you. I really thought about you as I was working on all that red:-)Your comments are sooo sweet and mean a lot to me.
Yes, I am almost ashamed of having complained about our Ottawa heat. 112 heat index: that's probably more than I could take. I also have a hard time painting in this weather - I get some work done in the morning and then I become totally lazy.

    Nice to see you back!
