WIP - Giant Cherries almost completed

I am still working on my giant cherries: the painting is on watercolor paper adhered to an 18" X 24" wood panel and will be varnished for display without glass.
I still have work to do on the shadows and on the tablecloth and lace...I am getting a bit tired of this one; I have struggled with it since I have realized that this surface is better for small cells than large washes!
Nevertheless, at this size, I like the impact the cherries make.
Next time, on this surface, I am simply going to try acrylics!
In the photo below, the colors are not entirely true: for example, the shadows under the plate are more grey than blue and they are actually much darker. I will try getting a better picture tomorrow in better daylight.
What do you think?

I hope that you are having a great week.

  3. christiane ..looks like your doing fine ...i have no experience with what you are doing ...i've always liked the idea of presenting paintings like this .. can you also apply a painting when you have finished painting instead of applying the paper and then painting as you are doing ?

    1. Jane, you can adhere the finished watercolor to the panel. I have done it several times. I feel that it works best with very small paintings...I have ruined a larger watercolor this way: there must have been some warping of the paper although it did seem flat - it did not adhere to the panel in places and caused some visible bubbling. It is almost impossible to remove the paper once it's on. For this reason, I find it less risky to paint after the paper has been mounted.

  4. Christiane...don't listen to your head...listen to me...ha. This is gorgeous. Your reds are delicious...can't wait to see your finish. I've never worked with paper adhered to board so this one is new to me in feel. You're doing great.

  7. I love this, Christiane, especially the way you are handling the plate - love those colors - also the colors in the cherries. This would be so impressive to see in person.

    1. Thank you so much, Barb, for your comments. I'm especially pleased that you like the plate and don't find it too bold on the left hand side: I almost held back, then told myself "Why play it safe...I'll go with the colors I feel like using!"

  8. It's looking beautiful! Sometimes for me the last part of a painting seems to take the most energy to finish, so I know what you mean. But this one will be a treasure!

    1. Theresa, thank you for all your encouragement! I have put this painting aside these last two or three days to simply play with acrylics and mixed media. I will try to get back to it tomorrow. Meanwhile, I will take a picture of my mixed media "fun" piece.
