First - and last? - orchid painting almost finished

My bronze orchid painting is almost finished. I have to darken the green at the lower right corner and blend some edges etc.
Do I like this painting? I am really not sure: these are certainly not my favorite colors and the many dark layers decreased the transparency that I like. I also find the composition  too busy. However, I am glad that I painted this even though it looked too complicated for me to tackle.  I may paint another orchid painting, but certainly not in these colors.

Did I like the Fabriano SP paper? yes, and I will try it again for another floral. It is really between a cold press and a hot press paper. The background is not quite as smooth as it would have been on a CP paper, but I like the way the paint glides on this paper.

Let me know what you think of this painting. I always appreciate your comments and suggestions...without them, painting would be too much of a lonely activity.

Have a great Sunday evening.

  1. I like how you made the contrast between the dark background and the light flowers. And how you made the different shades and values of green distinct from each other.

  2. I like this painting and think that it is not busy, just that orchids have a lot going on with them. Hope that makes sense:) The colors are lovely. I look forward to seeing the finished product and after you look back at it, then I think you will appreciate it.

  3. I like the color of the flowers. I agree with you that these flowers aren't the easiest to paint....they aren't one of my favorites either. But I think you've turned out a nice painting....we're our own worst critics.

  4. Hi Christiane. Thanks so much for visiting the other day. It was great to see you there. It is good to see you painting away and coming up with one great painting after another. I notice with each, you are advancing nicely in all areas. The colors in this are not as bad as you may think. As one poster said, we are our own worst critics. I've almost torn up paintings that the gallery owner said i should not. Wouldn't you know it, she was right and someone took the painting home! There are some i really love and they adorn my studio wall to this day. ?? Smile! But greens are tough and such a good thing to tackle. You have handled that extremely well with differing shades. Well done!

  5. Thank you all for your supportive comments. As Ross mentioned, greens are tough, but I usually dislike shades of yellow...and the golds and bronze here fit that category.
I have just lifted some highlights and darkened some of the greens. Framed and under glass, the painting does have a rich look to it because of the deep golds:-)
